Celebrations for the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Orthodox Centre, Cape Town

ag-Kyrilos-kai-Methodios-ISOn Sunday, 25 May, a celebratory lunch was held at the Orthodox Centre in Landsdowne to mark the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Equal to the Apostles and Evangelisers of the Slavs. These brothers from Thessalonica who preached the Gospel to the Slavs in the ninth century, are regarded as Fathers of the various Slavic nations, not least for devising a Slavic alphabet that enabled the translation of the Holy Scriptures and liturgical texts of the Church, and also contributed greatly to the cultures of these countries.

In welcoming those who attended, His Eminence Archbishop Sergios insisted that the Church  unites all peoples regardless of nationalities and ethnic background. The efforts of the Saints Cyril and Methodius to evangelise the Slavic people is the duty of every person of the Church. And it is the obligation of  all the various Orthodox Communities of Cape Town to celebrate the Feast Day of these Saints together.

He emphasised that his  vision for the new Orthodox Centre is that it should be place where all Orthodox Christians can learn more about their heritage and be nourished in their faith. Participants then heard more about the lives of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The recently-established Russian choir presented some traditional songs in praise of these two great saints and representatives of the Russian and Bulgarian communities spoke about their importance to their nations. A highlight of the celebration was when a group of girls from the Russian school performed a traditional Russian dance. This was followed by a lunch that was enjoyed by all.
