On Sunday 27 April, the Sunday of Thomas, His Eminence Archbishop Sergios officiated at the Service of the Holy Eucharist at the Church of Saint George in East London, together with the Very Reverend Archimandrite Fr. Evlogios Antonellos (from George) and Reverend Fr. George Pittaras, parish priest in East London, in the presence of Consul Thomas Matsoukas, consulate of Greece in Cape Town and Mr. Demetri Mutzouris, chairman of the Hellenic Community of East London and districts.
In his address after the service His Eminence said that the Apostle Thomas, also known as doubting Thomas was not present when the resurrected Christ appeared to the Apostles and insisted that he would not believe unless Christ appeared to him too. However, eight days after His Resurrection, Christ did appear to him and Thomas was overcome by Faith. He called out “My Lord and my God”. He went on to say that in our times we are called to believe without having seen and reminded us that Christ said “Blessed are they who have not seen but believe”.
His Eminence wished Consul Matsoukas for his name day which was being celebrated today and congratulated the members of the committee who under the leadership of Demetri Mutzouris are building on the strong foundations which have been laid by past committees of the community. He also made mention of the huge challenge they have set themselves in acquiring a new property with a view to building a new community centre and Church. He thanked the more senior members of the community who are always present to support the younger generation and their chosen committees. They are a valuable resource and much appreciated.
The Service was followed by a traditional “Panayiriko” lunch.
