Psychology and Orthodoxy: (part 2) complementary or contradictory? A workshop facilitated by Renos Papadopoulos Ph.D

ORTHODOX CENTRE  – 37 Lyndon Crescent, Pinati Estate, Lansdowne TUESDAY 14 JANUARY 2014 @ 7 pm entrance is free but you are required to register via e mail or contact Evgenia 082 311 9885 (refreshments will be served)

Outline of the workshop:

In this paper, which continues discussions that Professor Papadopoulos initiated in Cape Town in previous years, he will discuss how, in our increasingly demanding, perplexing and oppressing world today, people look for answers, comfort and meaning and often turn to psychology. He then explores the relationship between psychology and Orthodoxy, their similarities and differences. Particular attention will be given to the issues of suffering and facing adversity in everyday living.  The workshop is not only aimed at relevant professionals but is also open to anyone who is interested in the topic. You need not have attended the first lecture to participate in the workshop.

The speaker: Renos K. Papadopoulos, Ph.D., is Professor and Director of the ‘Centre for Trauma, Asylum and Refugees’, and a member of the Human Rights Centre, at the University of Essex, as well as Honorary Clinical Psychologist and Systemic Family Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic in London, UK;

 in addition, he is a training and supervising Jungian psychoanalyst and systemic family psychotherapist in private practice. Between 1970 and 1980 he was a lecturer in the Dept. of Psychology of the University of Cape Town. As consultant to the United Nations and other organizations, he has been working with refugees and other survivors of political violence and disasters in many countries. He consults and offers specialist trainings internationally and his writings have been published in twelve languages.

Over the last few years, he has been developing a new speciality, exploring the interface between psychotherapy and Orthodoxy and he has been supervising PhD research in this field.
